TOOLS AND UTILITIES · v4.1
JoinLeaveMessages
Custom join and leave messages, a welcome title and a join sound for your server. Set everything up in game from a menu, on every Minecraft version from 1.8 to 26.3.
01 · INSTALL
Getting started
- Download the jar from Spigot.
- Drop it into your server's
pluginsfolder. If you're upgrading, delete the old JoinLeaveMessages jar first, and remove JoinLeaveMessagesLegacy if you had it. - Restart the server. The console shows a JoinLeaveMessages banner when it's enabled.
- Run
/jlconfigin game to set your messages, title, sound and language. Every setting is in that menu.
02 · TRY IT
Message playground
Type a message with & colour codes and placeholders to see how it looks in game, then copy the line straight into config.yml.
03 · COMMANDS
Every command
The menu does almost everything, but every option also has a command, which is handy from the console.
| Command | Alias | What it does | Permission |
|---|
04 · PERMISSION
One permission
Example with LuckPerms: /lp user <name> permission set jl.config true. The menu buttons and chat prompts are only reachable through /jlconfig, so they're covered by the same permission.
06 · CONFIG
config.yml
Found at plugins/JoinLeaveMessages/config.yml. You don't need to edit this file: every setting can be changed in game with /jlconfig. Editing it directly and running /jlreload is an alternative. Changes made from the menu only touch the one setting you changed, so edits made to the file while the server is running are kept.
| Key | Default | What it does |
|---|
Full default config.yml show
07 · PLACEHOLDERS
Placeholders
Use these in the join message, leave message, title and subtitle. Colour codes use &, for example &a for green and &l for bold.
08 · SOUNDS
Join sounds
Sound names changed between Minecraft versions. Use any of the names below on any version and the plugin translates it for your server. You can also use any sound on your server by its name, or a key like minecraft:block.note_block.pling. If a sound doesn't exist on your version, the note block pling plays instead and you get a warning.

09 · LANGUAGES
Six languages
The plugin's own messages and menus come in these languages. Pick one with the Set Plugin Language button in /jlconfig, or set language in config.yml. It applies right away.

Common questions
My join message is still the default
Check that enablePlugin is on (Plugin Status in /jlconfig). Every time a setting is saved, the console shows a line like [JoinLeaveMessages] SomeonesSon set configuration.joinMessage to: …, so you can confirm your change was saved. If you edited config.yml by hand, run /jlreload afterwards. Also make sure there's only one JoinLeaveMessages jar in your plugins folder.
The join sound isn't playing
Make sure the join sound is on: in /jlconfig, the jukebox under Configure Join Sound says Currently: On (click it to switch). In config.yml that's enableJoinSound: 'True'. If you set a sound that doesn't exist on your server version, the plugin warns you and plays the note block pling instead. Pick a name from the sounds table, or use a minecraft: sound key.
No title shows up when I join
Titles only show if the join title or subtitle has text. If you used none to clear both, there's nothing to show. Very early 1.8 server builds (before 1.8.8) have no title support at all, so titles are skipped there.
%player_count% is one lower in the leave message
That's on purpose. In the leave message it counts the players still online, not counting the player who left. In the join message, title and subtitle it includes the player who just joined.
Do I still need JoinLeaveMessagesLegacy for 1.12?
No. JoinLeaveMessages now runs on every version from 1.8 to 26.3, so delete the Legacy jar and use this one.
How do I put everything back to the defaults?
Open /jlconfig and click Reset Config (the TNT in the top left). A second menu asks you to confirm, because this cannot be undone: every message, the title, subtitle, sound, plugin status and language go back to their defaults. Click No, Keep My Settings to back out.
Can I hide the join or leave message completely?
Yes. Set that message to none from the menu (or '' in config.yml). To turn off everything at once, use Plugin Status in /jlconfig.
NEED A HAND?
Ask in the Discord.
If something isn't working, join the Discord and ask. Include your server version and anything the console printed about JoinLeaveMessages.
